This table was commissioned by Tendril, a multi-dimensional branding and design studio in Toronto.
They requested an 11’ x 3.5’ meeting table in
white oak.
Given three design options, they selected one
that featured a large tabletop supported by two
slabs rotated perpendicular to each other.
Along with the table, they requested matching
benches at the same length.
Slabs were the only way to source continuous
timber that would support the length of this
project. All three slabs come from the same
tree, the two used for the table top are a book-
matched set. The slabs were flattened on a CNC
table, and a custom sled was needed to ensure
the first side stayed level. Internal checking was
revealed throughout the slabs as they were
planed down due to poor drying methods.
Butterfly joinery and epoxy were used to fill the
cracks and stabilize the timber.
